Overview
Arthroplasty is an effective, yet costly, surgical procedure for end‐stage osteoarthritis. Shorter stays in hospital are being piloted in Australia. In some countries, short stay is established practice, associated with improving perioperative care and enhanced recovery after surgery practices. Exploring the acceptability to patients of a short stay care pathway in hospital postarthroplasty is important for informing health policy, adoption and potential scalability of this model of care.

The background of this article focuses on the restoration of a neutral mechanical axis is a primary goal of total knee replacement (TKR). A mechanical axis within 3° of neutral has been correlated with improved implant longevity, function, and patient satisfaction. We hypothesize that the immediate post-operative radiograph is an unreliable method of measuring alignment following TKR surgery.

Specialty Update has been developed in collaboration with the Council of Musculoskeletal Specialty Societies (COMSS) of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Overview
Total hip arthroplasty is one of the most clinically efficacious and cost-effective medical interventions. Surgeons and scientists have continued to produce a tremendous amount of research data related to clinical outcomes, biomaterials, surgical techniques, treatment of complications, and socioeconomic analysis. Between April 2004 and April 2005, fifty-five reports related to total hip arthroplasty were published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American Volume), 140 were published in the Journal of Arthroplasty, and sixty-eight were published in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.

Overview
Dislocation remains the leading early complication of total hip arthroplasty; surgical approach and implant positioning have been recognized as factors influencing total hip arthroplasty stability. This article describes a total hip arthroplasty technique done through a single, tissue sparing anterior approach that allows implantation of the femoral and acetabular components without detaching or sectioning any of the muscles and tendons around the hip joint.
