ANTERIOR CERVICAL DISCECTOMY AND FUSION

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgical procedure performed to address spine issues in the neck.

This procedure is typically recommended for individuals experiencing conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or other cervical spine disorders that have not responded to non-surgical treatments.

What Occurs During Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion?

During ACDF surgery, the surgeon aims to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots by removing the problematic disc or bony spurs in the cervical spine. Following the removal of the disc, the adjacent vertebrae are often fused together using bone graft material and sometimes supplemented with metal plates or screws.

Why Consider Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion?
  • Pain Relief: ACDF is primarily performed to alleviate neck pain, arm pain, and associated symptoms caused by nerve compression.

  • Spinal Stability: Fusion of the affected vertebrae can restore spinal stability, preventing further nerve injury or symptoms.

  • Improved Function: Many patients may experience improved function and overall quality of life after ACDF surgery.
