When people think of robotic surgery, they often picture hips or knees. But in August 2025, something remarkable happened here on the Sunshine Coast — the region became one of the first places in the world where MAKO robotic technology was used for a total shoulder replacement.
At Buderim Private Hospital, Dr Joe Coory performed the procedure, marking the first surgeon on the Sunshine Coast, the second in Australia, and just the 7th worldwide.
What makes this technology different?
MAKO SmartRobotics™ uses advanced 3D scans to create a personalised surgical plan and provides real-time guidance during surgery. While the system has been assisting surgeons with hips and knees for many years, the shoulder application has only just been introduced globally.
For patients, this technology may assist surgeons with accurate placement of implants and surgical reproducibility. However, not everyone will be suitable for this approach, and outcomes depend on many factors including diagnosis, anatomy, and overall health.
A proud moment for the team
Dr Coory said it was a privilege for the surgical and hospital teams to be selected as one of the first MAKO robotic-assisted shoulder replacements outside of the United States.
